Rensselaer County Court Dockets

Rensselaer County court records in New York are available through several channels. RensselaerCourt.us allows you to search for public information about court cases in the county. Additionally, records can be found through the official resources of the New York State court system, the offices of court clerks, and through public terminals installed directly in court buildings.

Rensselaer Court System & Jurisdictions

The Rensselaer County court system is part of the Unified Court System of New York State and consists of several levels, each of which handles certain categories of cases.

Supreme Court (Верховний суд округу)

This is a court of general jurisdiction. It handles civil claims without a monetary limit, divorce cases, and other family matters requiring a higher court decision. The Supreme Court of the county also hears serious criminal charges (felonies) transferred from lower courts.

County Court (Окружний суд)

The County Court has criminal jurisdiction over all crimes committed within the county. It also accepts civil cases with claims up to $25,000.

Surrogate's Court (Сурогатний суд)

This court deals with inheritance issues — probate, estate administration of deceased persons, and appointment of guardians for estates.

Family Court (Сімейний суд)

Custody cases, alimony, protective orders, juvenile cases, and adoptions are all handled by Family Court. This court does not handle criminal cases.

City Courts та Town/Village Justice Courts

  • Troy City Court — handles minor criminal cases (misdemeanors), violations of city ordinances, traffic violations, and civil claims up to $15,000 within the city of Troy.
  • Rensselaer City Court — similar jurisdiction for the city of Rensselaer.
  • Town and Village Justice Courts — local courts in towns and villages of the county that handle minor offenses, traffic violations, and small claims (up to $5,000).

Traffic violation cases usually start in Justice Courts or City Courts. If you are unsure which court handles your case, contact the clerk's office of the respective municipality or use the online search through the NYS eCourts system.

Rensselaer Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

The hearing schedule in New York State courts is published through the NYS eCourts system — a centralized portal of the Unified Court System. To find the schedule for today, tomorrow, or the current week:

  1. Go to the iCourts / WebCivil Supreme portal (for Supreme Court cases) or WebCriminal (for criminal cases) on the ww2.nycourts.gov website.
  2. Select the Rensselaer county in the appropriate menu.
  3. Search by party name, case number, or hearing date.

Local Justice Courts often do not publish their calendars online. In such cases, call the court directly or visit its office. Information about county pre-trial service programs and related hearing dates can be clarified through the State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Note: Calendars are updated daily, and hearings may be rescheduled without notice. Always check the current date before visiting the court.

How to Get a Copy of a Rensselaer Court Document

You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways: online, in person, or by mail. The type of copy — certified or regular — depends on what you need it for.

Certified and Regular Copies

  • Regular (uncertified) copy — suitable for review. The court clerk provides it without official certification.
  • Certified copy — has the seal and signature of the clerk, confirming the authenticity of the document. Usually required for submission to another court, government agency, or for notarization.

How to Order

  1. In person — contact the County Clerk's office in the Rensselaer County courthouse. You will need the full name of the party and the case number (index number or docket number).
  2. By mail — send a written request specifying the case details, type of copy, and return address. Include a check or money order for the appropriate amount.
  3. Online — some Supreme Court documents are available through the eCourts portal. Downloads may be free for uncertified copies, but a certified copy must be ordered separately.

Requests for records held by city agencies can also be submitted under the New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).
